Introduction:
As we all know that safety has become part and parcel of everyone life. Safety is utmost important and basic element in all sectors; it may be industry, health, home, food, automobile, electricity, sports etc. where it is not there? every field safety is much needed. Oh! Before going in details let’s first know what is Safety? As per dictionary ‘Safety’ is the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury. By simple words ‘Safety’ is state of safe or to be protected.
Now we have understood meaning of safety let’s further check what is culture? Culture is the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society. In simple words again Culture is way of life.
If we combine Safety-Culture; it gives beautiful meaning “develop safe way in one’s life”. When we talk about an organization level the safety culture is the product of individual and group values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and patterns of behavior that determine the commitment of an organization's health and safety management.
One of the most interesting entities in this world that has remained undefined till today is young minds. No one identifies what really is going on in there and how it is going to be shaped when the kids grows up. A large percentage of young people’s talent, skills, characteristics, habits, and behaviors; hinges on how their mind-set’s were nurtured at the age of development.
The generation of each era treasures their very own and unique expressions, values, and mind-sets. This is where the crucial way of nurturing a twenty-first-century young mind comes in. So, now in this rapidly advancing era not only academic excellence matters, but also emphasizing on values of family, safety, etiquettes and everyday skills of life is important.
Times are changing and so is the survival style of people. The twenty-first-century era is the target of massive globalization, technological expansion, social maturation, and more.
In this overwhelming scenario, a group of population that is massively influenced in today’s time is the young minds of millennial. So along with professional & individual growth, proportionally growth towards safety culture is must. So I have jotted down further in this write-up some of the influential ways of nurturing young minds develop safety culture. Let’s understand one by one.
Loses occurred and causes due to lack of Safety Culture:
Globalization also affects the structure of workplaces, the way work is performed, and occupational safety and health. Hence intact workplace safety and health place is substantial important in every sector. When we check statistics/data of numbers of human loses happened due to lack of safety culture in recent past, numbers are in at very high note. This indicates that there is huge scope to create adequate safety culture. These human loses not only affects their own family but also creates huge negative impression on society and minds of young minds as well. Such loss may include physical injury, harm to property, psychiatric illness, or economic loss.
A work related negligence which results in illness or injury can not only put an employee job in trouble also impact their quality of life; it may also damage business’s productivity, finances and reputation- all of which can be difficult to recover from.
Because safety is such an important part of our daily lives, it’s important to nurture young minds of potential safety issues at all times and consciously act in safety’s best interest.
It’s easier said than done, of course. Daily responsibilities at work can often distract even diligent employees and decrease alertness. Employees who have been doing the same job for years are at an even higher risk because they’re less likely to consciously think about their actions. Repetitive tasks can switch on a person’s autopilot to the point they don’t need to put much thought into their work.
When this happens, safety becomes less of a daily thought until it’s brought back to the spotlight.
Without on-going awareness in young minds, when they attain their job, may begin to neglect safe practices in lieu of faster, more efficient methods. Taking a shortcut once with no negative consequences makes it easier to repeat those shortcuts and look for new ones – but safety leaders know it’s only a matter of time before those “efficiencies” result in an undesirable outcome.
Factors responsible for lack of safety culture:
It is very clear that negligence of safety measures and lack of awareness found root cause for lack of safety culture in young minds. So, let’s first start with primary part that is loses occurred due to negligence of Safety.
Negligence is the failure to adhere to the standards of behavior that the system puts in place to ensure the safety in one’s self. Someone who suffers loss caused by another's negligence may be able to sue for damages to compensate for their harm.
Now, let’s see second root cause of human loses that is lack of awareness. I feel this is very important reason for loss towards safety. Enriching knowledge with effectiveness, spreading across the learning across all the class of people especially in young kids is very essential. Especially in all workplaces young people starting their career a thorough understanding and awareness of health and safety are essentials, regardless of job role and industry. Where young minds are one’s absorbing fast when compared to others. So, relevant data’s through picturing, comic books, visuals (videos, various type of skits, drama), academic books, quiz, active training and many more ways it can be made familiar with. We shall discuss about this in next sections.
Safety awareness is absolutely essential in mitigating safety-related risks. Safety culture cannot be only in passive posters and occasional training sessions. It should be beyond this. Being constantly aware of how they’re operating at work and being able to recognize hazards is critical in mitigating safety-related risks. In short, creating on-going awareness is a huge part of building a successful safety culture.
Measures to be taken to develop safety culture in young minds:
Help young minds visualize safety; this is a commitment to be taken towards safety approaching matter from all angles by innovative development of safety plans. Below are five best ways to develop safety culture in young minds:
- Attack Root Causes of Accidents with Posters
Improve safety with just a little creativity. Yes, a well-placed poster can reignite interest in safety issues, especially if it’s eye-catching, fresh, and of course: relevant. One of the causes of injuries at work is when young minds aren’t aware that a danger exists. Posters can help with localized awareness of specific danger zones: consider a potential danger caused by an active machine.
- Use Humor for Safety Slogans
Encouraging a culture of safety is a lot easier when approach the matter from several angles. One of them can be humor. In fact, sometimes a few lines of humor may go a lot further than anything else if you’re trying to surround target audience with safety reminder slogans. If the voice in your head must ask “is this safe?” then it probably isn’t.
- Choose and Create Your Visual Aids from a Marketing Perspective
Just as a marketer would do, consider audience when selecting visual aids for safety. Get inside their minds and assess current visual aids from that perspective. Keep things fresh by treating your safety visuals like revolving collections from a museum: switch them out for new ones when they become stale. Anything that grabs attention and keep everyone's mind on safety is beneficial.
- Visualize Your OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration) Data
When teaching about EHS metrics, data visualization is essential because reaching people of different ages, educational levels, and styles of learning. While presenting OHSA data, you want to make sure all are responsive and alert—to save lives. Goal in reporting and presenting metrics in a visualized manner is to help maximize awareness, productivity, and connectivity with your young minds. New technologies can help young minds visualize strengths and weaknesses in day-to-day business operations.
Using various forms of charts like Pie charts (to show the most common injuries on the job), Column charts (to show incident breakdowns by month or the number of Corrective Actions and Preventive Actions (CAPA) completed), Trend charts (to give insight regarding historical and current performance, and based on those points, management can make necessary changes) can empower to effectively communicate to young minds in EHS progress.
Dashboards: Combining all of metrics into a dashboard is another great way to illustrate organization’s progress. Setup an interactive dashboard to navigate and interact with different charts and KPIs.
I would like to end this essay by telling recent incident, while I was traveling to Hosapete I saw very young boy may be of age 5 or 6 years, pillion rider in his father’s bike. They were turning right to overtake lorry ahead for them, I could witness the young boy at pillion seat was extending his right hand. I thought to myself young minds are developing safety culture.
Conclusion:
I feel that above said measures are strong points to nurture young minds and in near future there will be no wonder if young minds visualize safety in better ways and develops mindset towards safety culture. We will be soon witnessing best performing companies from the average performers. Many companies receive so many safety accolades and improve safety records year after year. We can assure there will be major transformation of people, employees, young minds towards safety approach and improve operational efficiency; preventing any incidents.
